Golden Hinde

A replica of the ship Sir Francis Drake used for his three-year circumnavigation of the globe (1577 – 1580), the current Golden Hinde was built in 1971 – 73 and still sails.

The original Golden Hinde (then named the Pelican) left Plymouth on 13 December 1577 and returned on 26 September 1580. Drake was knighted on the deck of the ship by Elizabeth I on 4 April 1581. The original Golden Hinde was broken up in the 17th century.

Visitors can explore the ship on their own, or take part in a guided tour.
