Enjoy the afternoon in the Great Chamber listening to seasonal music of earlier times

The Waites of Gloucester recreate the town band that played for the Mayor and citizens of Gloucester in the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. We generally play music from the 1500s and 1600s. We use modern reproductions of historical instruments: recorders, curtals, shawms, crumhorns, bagpipes, rebec, etc.

The Gloucester Waites’ Christmas presentations aim to introduce seasonal music from earlier times. Some of it will almost certainly be unfamiliar, but we will also incorporate a few more familiar tunes. Much of this music is best described as ‘traditional’ because its origin is within the oral traditions of folk-music, but other pieces belong to the culture of literate polyphony of the late Renaissance.

At Christmas we are pleased to be joined by soprano, Karen Jones, who will sing some of the music which we would usually only be able to present instrumentally.
